michael johnson

Sam and RubyEarning two #1 Country hits, a #1 Pop hit and a #1 R&B song is why Michael Johnson has the reputation of being a very diverse artist. Living up to his reputation, Johnson's most recent debut release with Vanguard Records, Departure, features a mixture of music styles including blues, jazz and folk music.

Not only is Johnson a classically trained guitarist and a former member of the Chad Mitchell Trio, but also an off-Broadway actor. While in the Chad Mitchell Trio, Johnson spent some time co-writing songs with John Denver. Later, Johnson had a major supporting role in the off-Broadway production, "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris."

Johnson went on to be nominated for a Grammy for "Bluer Than Water" which went straight to number one on the Pop and Adult Contemporary Charts. Johnson's "Almost Like Being in Love" also climbed to number one on the R&B charts which was followed by "Give Me Wings" hitting number one on the Billboard Country Song of the Year and also nominated for Song of the Year by the Country Music Association. In 1988, Johnson earned three more hits including, "That's That," "I Will Whisper Your Name" and "Crying Shame." Through all his work, Johnson continues to defy categorization.
