Six months after my marriage of 23 years ended, I became quite ill and was admitted to the hospital. I soon went into shock and was transferred to ICU. After five days, I was discharged only because I could not spend anymore time away from work. My hospital bill totaled $185,000 and I was forced to file bankruptcy. My medical status continues to worsen: First, I am a cancer survivor and cannot afford my follow-up tests. In addition, it was recently found that my family has a congenital heart condition that I also cannot afford to be tested for. Amazingly, I am considered poor by national standards, but not poor enough to quality for state medical aid.
