On June 14, 2001, I underwent a quadruple bypass operation. Because the company I worked for owned their own insurance company, they decided I was too much of a liability and terminated my employment while I was on family medical leave. I am continuously denied insurance with other insurance companies because they refuse to speak with me upon learning I had open-heart surgery. At 61 years old, my wife and I cannot take the financial and emotional strain this situation brings us. In November, my wife had a medical scare that left her in the emergency room for 20 hours and $13,000 worth of medical bills. Even though we both work over 60 hours a week, we would have been in financial ruins if she did not have medical insurance.
